First things first:  To paraphrase Cicero, We are in bondage to ads so that we may be hosted free.  Sorry for the pop-ups; they come with the free Web site.  If you hate them as much as I do, I recommend that you go here and download the Google toolbar.  It adds Google's great search engine to your Web browser and, best of all, blocks pop-ups.  It's free, so take a look.

Well, we've come to the end of the semester, my friends, and all that's left to do is hand in the research paper.  We will meet December 21 in our regular classroom at the usual time (6:30 p.m.) just for me to collect your papers.  Remember, if you would like me to return your paper, please have a self-addressed, stamped (with full postage, as I do not add any), and unsealed envelope with it, and I will put it right in the mail to you when I finish grading.  You can also e-mail me for your paper and course grades; I will send them as soon as I have them. (Look for your official grades in the mail in early January.)

It's been a pleasure working with you all this semester, and I wish you Happy Holidays and good luck in Comp. II!

Research Paper Final Draft Due December 21

Remember to hand in the following:

                                           ü    Final Draft (on top)

ü    Rough Draft (with my comments)

ü    All articles and notes used

ü    Prewriting on topic~ Finding a focusing question (when we

sent topics around the room and everyone added a

                                                     question)

ü Prewriting on topic ~ Interest Inventory (if you needed

                                                      to do one)

ü    Graded final draft of paper 3 (only if you expanded it for

                                                      the research paper)

All right, calm down, take a deep breath.  I know what you're thinking:  What could I ever hope to do over the semester break at the holidays that will top the fun of this.  I mean, talk about anticlimactic -- you'll be bored, restless, not know what to do.  The visceral thrill of research and writing -- the veritable command of a subject -- will have passed.  I empathize.  All I can say is, live for the present and love the next few weeks.  It's the best time of your life.

Now for some details:  Find a revised schedule of the rest of the semester here (this is the same one I e-mailed to everyone).  The handout on Research Tips is essential information for researching, especially for using the all-important periodical databases.  If you need an extra copy, click the title in the previous sentence.  The larger, and equally important, Research Paper Packet, alas, is not available online.  Each of you should have a copy that I passed out in class.  Please bring it to class for the rest of the semester, as we will be using parts of it each week.

       ♫~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Writing can teach us the dignity of speaking the truth, and it spreads out from the page into all of our life, and it should.  Otherwise, there is too much of a schism between who we are as writers and how we live our daily lives.  That is the challenge:  to let writing teach us about life and life about writing.  Let it flow back and forth.  ~ Natalie Goldberg

The maker of a sentence launches out into the infinite and builds a road into Chaos and old Night, and is followed by those who hear him with something of wild, creative delight.   ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
